Stephane Mbia is a Cameroonian footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder for Queens Park Rangers. Stephane Mbia was born in the Cameroonian capital of Yaounde and moved to Doula to play at the Kadji Sports Academy when he was 17 years-old. Previous graduates of the academy include former African Footballer of the Year Samuel Eto'o, as well as once-Manchester United midfielder Eric Djemba-Djemba. Mbia later signed for French outfit Rennes in 2004, being used as a holding midfield player and scoring his first goal in professional football two years later against Lyon. After five years at Rennes he reportedly rejected Everton in order to move to Marseille in 2009, for a fee believed to be in the region 10.4million. Often used as a utility player before, Mbia would be transformed into a centre-back and went on to cement his place in that position for Marseille. Mbia was a regular at junior international level for Cameroon and made the step up to the senior side in 2005. He has since gone on to represent his country 36 times, scoring on three occasions. Mbia has picked up a number of winner's medals in his career to date, most notably the French league championship with Marseille in 2010, as well as the French League Cup in 2010, 2011 and 2012. At international level, Mbia was a losing finalist in the African Cup of Nations with Cameroon in 2008. He is also the older brother of Franck, who currently plays for FC St. Gallen in the Swiss Challenge League.
