She touched her hair. ‘I have everything she has. I have the same brown hair she has, the same green eyes , the same lips, and the same heart, but mine knocks because I am in love while hers does not.’ Angrily, she wiped her lipstick from her mouth with her wrist. ‘This is not fair!’ she shouted. Her sad eyes filled with tears. ‘I fell in love with him from the first time I saw him, and from that first time, I had already lost him. ‘No,’ she shouted, scaring her mother, ‘I will not let it be. I will tell him tomorrow about my feelings, and I am sure he carries some feelings for me too. I am sure.’ Her mother hugged her worriedly. ‘What is happening to you, my dear?’ The next night, there was to be a big party for Mamta and John’s wedding. Pooja moved through the palace alone wearing a modern r  ed dress. She entered the palace bookshop where John was sitting alone reading a book. For a moment, she stood by the shop’s curtain, watching him sadly. Then suddenly, she stepped in and closed the door behind her. John looked up in astonishment. ‘Pooja? What are doing here? How can I help you?’ She caught his arms. ‘Don’t waste your life,’ she cried. ‘Don’t do it. Listen to your heart, and don’t listen to your father’s order.’ ‘What do you mean,’ he asked her, dumbfounded by her words. ‘I really don’t understand you.’ She closed his mouth with her thump. ‘I am in love with you,’ she said. ‘I feel in love from the first look. and you? Aren’t you…don’t you carry any feelings for me too?’ ‘No,’ he said, in shock. ‘Not at all. I don’t even know you well enough. Besides, I will be marrying your sister within a few hours.’ She hugged him and said very sadly. ‘Why not me then? No, I won’t let you do so. I love you, and you are mine.’ He slapped her cheek. His voice was angry, his tone warning. ‘Behave and control yourself, please. I don’t love you, and neither do I love her yet. I am only doing my father’s request for our best interest.’ As John walked away, Pooja threw a vase of flowers at the wall. ‘No,’ she cried, ‘you are mine, and I won’t lose you.’ Just then, Sunny appeared from behind a big sofa that he’d been resting on. Pooja gasped and cleaned the tears from her cheek Still, some tears wetted her eyes as she asked, ‘You, how long have you been here? How dare you spy on me?’ He smiled coolly. ‘I’ve been here since the beginning of your play.’ In a high voice, he imitated her, ‘“Oh god, you are mine, and I won’t lose you?” Well I am sorry for your romantic scene’s sad ending, my poor future wife.’ Angrily, she threw another vase of flowers at him. ‘Go to hell,’ she cried. ‘I will never marry you. I hate you till death.’ She picked up three more vases of flowers, one by one, aiming each in his direction. But he avoided her, moving quickly out of the way of each angry torpedo. Suddenly, he opened the bookshop’s big curtains so it covered her face and caught her quickly. She watched him, catching her breath in sharp angry puffs. He looked straight into her sad eyes. Shards of light reflected in his sky blue eyes. ‘Stop, he said. ‘Don’t hurt yourself. Life is difficult, and it doesn’t give us everything we ask for any time we ask for it.’ She moved away from him and said fiercely, ‘But I will fight to get what I want till the last drop of my blood. After she left, he said sadly. ‘And so will I, my hell itself.’ Mamta stood in her bedroom watched herself in the mirror. She wore a red Indian wedding dress, and tears were in her eyes. ‘I can’t,’ she gasped sadly. ‘My god, I can’t mix my blood with theirs, and I can’t breathe the air they breathe.’ Meanwhile, John, who had retired to his own bedroom, looked up in astonishment when he saw Pooja standing in front of him, watching him sadly. ‘Now what?’ he demanded icily. ‘Did you come to apologize?’ She threw herself at him, hugging him and crying like a child. ‘I came to tell you how much I love you, John.’ He pushed her rudely away. ‘What if someone saw you like this?’ he hissed. ‘What would they say about us? Are you mad?’ ‘They will say that I am in love,’ she replied. ‘And in love everything is allowed. I will fight to get you till the last second of my life. Do you hear me?’ She left, leaving John  deeply in shock.
