It was the Mustang's long range that enabled Allied bombers to reach deep into Axis territory and crush German industry. Over 800 Mustangs were given the designation Mk.III and put into RAF service where they helped expand the daylight bombing offensive. As fighter losses mounted, Luftwaffe formations were decimated and unable to replace losses due to the loss of industry.
