Porco Rosso (Kurenai no Buta, lit. Crimson Pig) is a Studio Ghibli Collection 1992 classic anime adventure written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It is based on Hikōtei Jidai, a three-part watercolor manga by Miyazaki. Take Flight! When “Porco” – whose face has been transformed into that of a pig by a mysterious spell – infuriates a band of sky pirates with his aerial heroics, the pirates hire Curtis, a comical rival pilot, to “get rid” of him. On the ground, the two pilots compete over the affections of Gina, a beautiful cabaret singer. But it is in the air, with Fio, a young and talented airplane engineer/designer, where Porco’s true battles are waged. From its Mediterranean Sea settings to its dazzling aerial dogfights of amazing sweep and grace, PORCO ROSSO is an exhilarating ride you’ll never forget. Awards Won Mainichi Film Concours, Best Animated Film Won Ishihara Yujiro Award Porco Rosso Reviews “The likability of the characters, Joe Hisaishi’s bouncy score, and the sheer delight evident in the flying scenes leaves the viewer feeling refreshed and satisfied by the end. There is some sadness in realizing that not even Miyazaki makes ‘em like he used to anymore, but that makes this film all the more special.” AnimeDiet.net “No doubt about it. Porco Rosso is a must-see for Miyazaki fans – and for any adult who enjoys exceptional movies.” ReelTalk Reviews “Porco Rosso could be the most underrated Miyazaki-directed anime so far.” T.H.E.M Anime “Combining exquisite animation, (slyly subverted) Boys' Own action, and (barely concealed) adult themes, Porco Rosso goes the whole hog, offering anti-war escapades that will appeal to all ages.” Eye for Film “..wonderful period detail, cackling villains and visual humour of Sherlock Hound, the excitement and adventure of Castle of Cagliostro with its anti-hero Lupin III, and simply some of the most magical aviation sequences of any of his films.” DVD Talk “No one else in animation so successfully makes happiness into cogent entertainment, or puts such a uniquely joyous spin on stories that could just be rote action-adventures if placed in the wrong hands.” AV Club.com
