In 1977 when Jim Barry first purchased the Lodge Hill property, his intention was to devote the entire area to Riesling. However, there was a small area which had a gentle slope facing north, capturing the warmer conditions of the elevated site and he decided that it was an ideal place to grow a premium Shiraz. The wine has mouth-filling flavours of bramble, chocolate, menthol, rosemary. Stuctural wine with delicate, sensual and ripe tannins. A wine that is ready for immediate enjoyment with a view to cellaring for 7 to 10 years from vintage. 'The Clare-based Barry family has long turned out a cracking range of wines, and while the current releases rank among their finest, the Lodge Hill Shiraz is a stunner. Charged with layers of black fruit and spice, expect a mouthful of wine that's plush and direct, yet still really light on its feet. Have it on standby for when it's time to pull out the big guns.' - Matt Skinner. 'This Clare Valley red shows red berry fruit, spice and pepper on the nose and palate, with fine ripe tannins and some nutty oak. It'd go well now with roast beef, a good steak or a hearty casserole but should mature well over the next five years'. Rating: 92 - Courier Mail, Brisbane, 17 May 2013, by Mike Frost.
