The earliest writings about golf as we know it today are not to do with the rules of the game, but of its banning in the 15th century by the King of Scotland - apparently it interfered with archery practice! Scotland gave the world the modern game of golf, but it took an additional 400 years for the game to become popular outside its ancestral home. Since then the popularity of golf has grown and it now stands proud as one of the most popular, and lucrative, sports worldwide.
