ITINERARY Day 1: Depart Australia Today you will head for the airport and board your flight. Destination = Portugal! Day 2: Arrive in Lisbon (D) Arrive in captivating Lisbon, one of the oldest cities in Europe with its Moorish and Roman ruins. Transfer to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day to relax and settle in. This evening, enjoy a welcome drink and orientation with your Tour Manager and fellow travelers, followed by dinner at the hotel. Day 3: Lisbon City Tour (B) Today’s tour of Lisbon highlights the variety of heritage and styles that make it one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. Begin with a view of the treasured 16th century Belem Tower and the Jeronimos Monastery, the city’s most prominent monument, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Afterwards, visit the Cathedral of Lisbon and enjoy the elegant Liberdade Avenue. Take a walk along the winding cobblestone streets to Alfama, the old Fisherman’s Quarter, nestled between the Grand Castle and the River Tagus. Enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure. Optional Activity: Sintra Tour This afternoon, join the optional tour to quaint Sintra, the “Glorious Eden” of Lord Byron, and ancient summer retreat of the royal court. Day 4: Lisbon – Seville (B, D) Depart Lisbon after breakfast this morning and begin the journey South. Take in the scenery as you cross the region of Alentejo, with its rolling hills, vineyards and oak trees, before reaching the Spanish border and entering the region of Andalucia. Continue your drive through picturesque Andalucia to Seville, where you will check into your new hotel and enjoy dinner. Optional Activity: Flamenco Show Seville is known as the birthplace of Flamenco dancing. After dinner, you may wish to attend an optional Flamenco Show and be wowed by the local performers. Day 5: Seville City Tour (B) This morning view the Moorish architecture of the Giralda Tower and visit the Cathedral, the world’s largest Gothic monument. Drive to the Plaza de Espana, passing Maria Luisa Park, and explore the narrow streets and the many plazas of the Santa Cruz Quarter. Enjoy the rest of the afternoon at your own pace. Optional Activity: Cordoba Tour Founded by the Romans, Cordoba is one of the most cultured and refined cities of Medieval Europe. Visit the Mezquita, a former Moorish Mosque that today is Cordoba’s main Cathedral. Continue with a walking tour of the city and visit the Jewish Quarter and the medieval synagogue. Day 6: Seville – Gibraltar – Costa del Sol (B, D) Head South this morning after breakfast and enjoy a visit to the impressive Rock of Gibraltar, a British Colony for over 300 years standing guard over the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean and Europe meets Africa. Enjoy a tour of the area and drive up to see St. Michael’s Cave and the famous Barbary Apes with dramatic views of both the Spanish and Moroccan coastline. Enjoy some time in the main street of town with its colonial buildings and duty-free shops before proceeding to the Costa del Sol. Day 7: Costa del Sol Free Day or Malaga Tour (B) Enjoy a full day at leisure in Costa del Sol to discover all of the delights of this resort area. Day 8: Ronda Day Trip (B, L) Today your tour takes you to the dramatic cliffside city of Ronda, considered the birthplace of modern bullfighting. Journey to a bull and horse farm set in a spectacular Mediterranean pastureland. Experience La Dehesa, the pasture where the cattle graze, as you learn about the significance of bullfighting in Spain. Enjoy lunch together at the farm. Continue on to Plaza de Toros, Spain’s oldest bullring. Here, you can see the historic stables and museum along with displays of famous Matadors. Visit the Santa Maria la Mayor Church, a structure with mixed styles resulting from over 200 years of construction. Return to the Costa del Sol tonight. Day 9: Costa del Sol – Alhambra – Granada (B, D) Today you say goodbye to the Southern coast and journey to Moorish Granada. Your visit is highlighted by a tour of the magnificent 13th century Alhambra Palace, one of Spain’s most celebrated monuments, dramatically perched atop Assabica Hill overlooking the entire city. This imposing hilltop fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the world’s finest examples of Moorish art and architecture. During the reign of the Moors, the Alhambra served as the summer residence of the royal family. Walk along the lanes of the serene Generalife Gardens with its beautifully designed courtyards, waterfalls, ponds and views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Tonight you will be treated to dinner at a local restaurant. Day 10: Granada – Madrid (B) Today you travel onwards to Madrid via the region of La Mancha, legendary home of Don Quixote. Stop in Toledo, the former capital city of Spain that still retains its medieval atmosphere and charm. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, Toledo is known for its extensive monumental heritage and historical coexistence of Christian, Muslim and Jewish cultures. A walking tour will include a visit to the Church of Santo Tome to see the masterpiece painting by El Greco, before a visit to the Synagogue of Santa Maria La Blanca; the oldest standing synagogue in Europe. Continue on to Madrid and enjoy the evening at leisure. Day 11: Madrid City Tour (B) Wake refreshed this morning and enjoy a sightseeing tour of Madrid. Drive along the Gran Via, through the Opera District, past the Plaza de Colon and view the Royal Palace. Pass through Puerta del Sol Plaza and Plaza de Espana with its monument to the author Cervantes. The tour will end at the world-renowned Prado Museum, where you will be able to view works of art by famous artists such as El Greco, Velazquez and Ribera. Enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure. Optional Activity: Escorial Tour Enjoy a visit to what has often been described as the “eighth wonder of the world”. El Escorial is perhaps Philip II’s most enduring legacy to Spain. This monastery-palace-mausoleum is situated approximately one hour outside of Madrid in the foothills of the Guadarrama Mountains. Day 12: Madrid – Morocco (B) Transfer to Madrid’s airport this morning to board a flight to Morocco. Arrive in Casablanca and transfer to your hotel in Rabat, capital city of Morocco. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure to explore, or relax in your hotel ready for your the next leg of your adventure. This evening, enjoy a complimentary Moroccan mint tea during an orientation meeting with your Tour Manager. Day 13: Rabat – Fez (B) This morning, enjoy a city tour of Rabat. View the Royal Palace and the ancient ruins of Chellah, the Oudaya Kasbah, and the Hassan Tower before continuing on to Fez. En route, stop and visit the ancient ruins of the Roman city of Volubilis where you will get a chance to see the wonderfully preserved original mosaics, Roman Road, and city layout. As you travel through the Moroccan countryside, pass by the Holy City of Moulay Idriss for a photo opportunity. Arrive in Fez later in the day, and enjoy a breathtaking view of the ancient city from a hill overlooking the medina. Take a short bus tour on the way to your new hotel. Day 14: Fez Free Day or Optional Fez Tour (B, D) Enjoy a full day at leisure to wander the old medina at your own pace. Though the city has endured periods of hardship, it has emerged more vibrant than ever, boasting its own distinctive culture, art and cuisine. This evening, enjoy a special dinner hosted by a local family and learn about Moroccan culture and tradition. Optional Activity: Fez Guided Tour Fez served as the capital of Morocco for more than 400 years and is home to the University of Al Karaouine, the oldest operating university in the world. It is particularly famous for its tanneries and the Fes el Bali Medina. A short visit to the surrounding leather shops gives you the best view of the tanneries. View the Attarine Medersa, Moulay Idriss mausoleum, and the Nejjarine Fountains and Museum. Finally, view the exterior of the Royal Palace and walk through the famed Jewish quarter of the medina where you will get a chance to experience one of the few remaining Jewish cemeteries in Morocco. Day 15: Fez – Marrakesh (B) Today you depart for Marrakech, through the ever-changing landscape of the Moroccan valleys and Atlas Mountains. You will depart Fez in the early morning and arrive in Marrakech in the early evening, with plenty of rest stops along the way and a break for lunch. The journey begins with beautiful views of the mountains around Ifrane and ends in the dry flatlands around Marrakech, allowing you to experience the full scale of the country’s terrain. This evening, enjoy a short bus tour of Marrakech en route to your hotel. Day 16: Marrakesh Tour (B) Your morning tour of this fabulous city begins at the 16th century Saadian Tombs, where Saadian royalty found their final resting place. Continue to the Koutoubia Minaret and the beautiful Bahia Palace. You will also have the opportunity to shop for authentic Moroccan silver jewellery, before strolling through the bustling Medina to Djemaa el Fna Square. The rest of the afternoon is yours to explore as you please. Visit the Marrakesh Museum with its gorgeous display of artifacts before continuing to the magnificent Majorelle Botanical Gardens, inspired by French artists and fashion designer Yves St. Laurent. Day 17: Marrakesh – Casablanca (B, D) After breakfast, you will leave Marrakesh and travel to Casablanca to check in to your new hotel. Once in Casablanca, enjoy a half day sightseeing tour which includes the exterior of the Hassan II Mosque, the largest Mosque in Morocco and the beautiful Corniche seaside. Continue on a short drive through the residential areas of Casablanca to the city centre to visit the Mohammed V Square, the Habous quarter and the Notre Dame de Lourdes Cathedral.
