A selection of writings from the pen of one of the wittiest men who ever lived. This compilation showcases his writing talent and features his very best work, ranging from the philosophical novel The Picture of Dorian Gray; the short story collections Lord Arthur Savile's Crime, The Happy Prince and A House of Pomegranates, the long letter De Profundis, addressed to his former lover, Lord Alfred Douglas; The Ballad of Reading Gaol, a poem written while Wilde was in exile following his release from prison. The collection ends with some of Wilde's critical essays. The mark of a great writer is his relevance to subsequent generations of readers. Oscar Wilde is probably more popular now than he was in his lifetime and this compilation is the perfect introduction to his genius.Author BiographyOscar Wilde was born in October 1854 in Dublin. His father was a doctor, his mother a poet. After attending Trinity College in Dublin and Magdalen College in Oxford, Wilde embarked on a career as a poet, quickly establishing himself as a leading figure in what became known as the aesthetic movement, a theory of art and literature advocating the pursuit of beauty for its own sake. His marriage to the relatively wealthy Constance Lloyd produced two sons. Shortly after his marriage Wilde accepted the editorship of Lady s World, an obscure magazine whose fortunes he revived. Simultaneously, his own writing career entered its most fertile period. He was at the height of his powers when the unwise prosecution for libel of the father of his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas, led to imprisonment and social disgrace in 1895. He died in exile in 1900, aged 46." The Oscar Wilde Collection Release Date Australia: November 15th, 2016
