Long used by mankind as a faster mode of transport than travelling on foot, the bicycle has historically been linked to the history of human beings for centuries. Bicycles were around at the turn of the century and current estimates place the manufacture and sale of more than a billion bicycles in operation worldwide. Of course not everyone who owns a bicycle goes into competition with it and are more likely to engage in simple pursuits of exercise and relaxation with them. In many countries they are still the chief mode of transportation in larger metropolitan areas when the streets are too clogged by cars and other vehicles. Compared to their fossil fuelled cousins bicycles are good for the environment having zero emissions and offering the user health benefits that come from exercise. And in comparison to the motorcar, bicycles are more affordable and take less maintenance to keep them in top shape.
