Philip Holden was a great outdoorsman, whose writing explored the heart of rural New Zealand. When Philip passed away in 2005, he had written 57 books, many of them New Zealand classics. His proud legacy is preserved in this handsome, richly illustrated volume. Hunting & High Country brings together the most-loved writing and photographs from his illustrious career. Review “…Lavishly illustrated with stunning landscape pictures and shots of animals, the book is an eye opener as it recounts tales from hunting boar and stag to a chilling tale of one lost hunter's survival in the 70s…Holden manages to write in a style which is accessible to all as he recounts life in the wilds of the countryside – be it on hunting trips or following the farmer's trials of a harsh winter. But what he manages to capture is more than just a snapshot of a way of life which will be alien to some – by using writings from history and detailing species, he's tied both the modern hunting and a timeless way of existence together. Tales of how Bendigo rams ended up in the South Island serve both as a revelation of a change within the country as well as a snapshot of history. The pictures within this book stand out, taken as they are from Holden's own personal archives – they demonstrate a love of life in the bush both here and abroad as well as a respect for nature's bounty. Some of the scenery he's shot is just amazing – from snow on the sheep as they gather on the hills, to a beautifully detailed shot of a kea; they will serve as an inspiration for many to consider what beauty lies within the bush…” Darren Bevan, TVNZ About the author: Philip Holden was born in Wales. He immigrated to New Zealand at the age of 21 after reading about positions available as a ‘Government Hunter’. For seven years he became a professional hunter working in remote areas of the North and South Islands and the experiences gained over this time became the inspiration for his earlier works. His first book Pack and Rifle went on to become one of New Zealand's classic hunting yarns. Philip later gave up hunting in order to photograph and write about the land and its people. ‘Station Country’ is his most popular series from this time, telling the stories of the men and women who make a living off the beautiful yet isolated back country. On his death in 2005, Philip had created 54 published volumes of work, making him one of New Zealand’s most prolific and successful writers on the outdoors.
