About lowerSpendings

Helping Australians shop smarter, one price at a time.

Ever bought something on sale, only to discover it was cheaper a few weeks earlier? Or wondered whether that massive "50% off" discount was actually as good as it looked?

That's exactly the kind of thing lowerSpendings was built to help with.

We believe shopping should be more transparent. You shouldn't need to visit a dozen websites, second-guess advertised discounts, or spend hours researching whether you're getting a fair price.

Our goal is simple: give Australians the information they need to make smarter purchasing decisions and keep more money in their pockets.

Why lowerSpendings exists

Retail pricing can be frustratingly opaque.

Prices change constantly. Products appear under different names at different retailers. Discounts aren't always what they seem, and finding the best price can feel like a full-time job.

We think consumers deserve better.

lowerSpendings brings together product information, prices from Australian retailers and historical pricing data to help answer three simple questions:

  • Where can I buy it for less?
  • Is this actually a good deal?
  • Should I buy it now, or wait?

We're also interested in the bigger picture. Prices don't change in isolation, and understanding why something costs more or less can be just as valuable as knowing its current price.

Our ambition is to make that information easier for everyone to access and understand.

Hi, I'm Michael.

I'm a software engineer based in Perth, Western Australia, and the person behind lowerSpendings.

I've spent much of my career building software platforms, working with large amounts of data and solving complex technical problems.

Years ago, I started lowerSpendings as a side project. What began as an idea to make comparing prices easier grew into a website that, at its peak, attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors a month.

It was exciting, but keeping millions of product listings up to date, matching identical products across retailers and maintaining reliable pricing information was an enormous undertaking for one person.

Eventually, life and work took priority, and lowerSpendings took a back seat.

But I never really stopped believing in the idea.

In 2026, I decided to bring it back.

Technology has come a long way, particularly in machine learning and AI. Problems that once required countless hours of manual work are becoming much more manageable.

That means I can spend less time on repetitive maintenance and more time building the features I've always wanted lowerSpendings to have.

And most importantly, I can focus on making it genuinely useful for the people who visit.

Putting consumers first

lowerSpendings is built around a few principles:

Transparency matters. A discount isn't necessarily a bargain. Historical prices and meaningful comparisons help tell the real story.

Accuracy matters. Comparing prices only works when we're comparing the right products. We're continually improving how we identify, categorise and match products across retailers.

Your interests come first. lowerSpendings may earn a commission when you purchase through certain retailer links. Our aim is to keep commercial relationships separate from the integrity of our price comparisons and recommendations.

Good information should be accessible. You shouldn't need to be a bargain-hunting expert to make an informed purchase.

We're not going to get everything right all the time. Retailers change prices, product data can be messy, and matching millions of listings is challenging.

But we'll keep improving, and we believe being open about those challenges is better than pretending they don't exist.

What's next?

We're just getting started again.

Beyond comparing prices, we're working towards something bigger: helping Australians understand pricing trends, recognise genuine bargains and make better decisions about when to buy.

Whether you're comparing a new television, replacing an appliance or simply trying to make your household budget stretch further, we want lowerSpendings to become a place you can rely on.

Thanks for being part of the journey.
