Ruby Gill’s third record Fishing is not about fishing makes profound the realm of the normal, honouring that to survive in the true crime that is the current world, you must build a life around the most banal, natural things: crushes, prawns, family, driving, self-knowledge and saying i love you in different ways - in order to avoid descending into the existential abyss.
Co-produced with Tom Iansek (#1 Dads, Big Scary) in London at the Crowe’s Nest Studio (Lianne Le Havas, Little Simz) with band Lewis Coleman and Jess Ellwood. The acclaimed queer singer-songwriter from South Africa (now living in Australia) explains in 11 songs how she has managed to claw back meaning from a dramatic childhood, and how “the point” really lies in sitting across the table from your girl, even with the world being on fire, brothers trying to die and the unfortunate tendency of men to stack magazines on their coffee table for intellectual show.
