In Disney s 1959 film Sleeping Beauty, Princess Aurora is cursed by Maleficent to die on her sixteenth birthday by pricking her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel. Three kind fairies, Flora, Fauna and Merryweather, manage to lift the curse s power to an endless sleep. Still, the King and Queen fear for their daughter s life, and task the fairies with protecting Aurora deep in the forest to nullify the curse.
